I see many websites that claim the LBRP as their own, and I also see all sorts of interesting theories about how it “banishes” the elements. To set the record straight here and now, the LBRP was introduced by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. And the ritual isn’t really banishing the four Elements.
In reading Poke Runyon’s excellent work, “The Book of Solomon’s Magick”, I saw where he recommends students to envision the Pentagrams green, rather than the usual electric blue. He says that, because we are creating “Earth Pentagrams”, they must be imagined as green. However…
There are NO Earth Pentagrams anywhere in the LBRP. Nor are there any Air, Water or Fire “Lesser Pentagrams”.
Nor is the practitioner banishing the four Elements (Water in the West, Air in the East, etc). The four Pentagrams in the LBRP are not Elemental, they are directional. All four Pentagrams in all four directions are drawn from the Earth point ONLY because Earth is a correspondence of Assiah (the fourth and the lowest of the four worlds in Qabalistic theory). In the Golden Dawn, for example, all of the Elemental Invocations, which are given throughout the Elemental Grades, use the same Lesser Pentagram. This is because the entire Outer Order is contained in Assiah.
And the four names that are used to charge the four Pentagrams are not Elemental, but directional as well (the four quarters of Malkuth).

These are excellent points that are often overlooked, even by people who really should know better.
I once knew a practitioner who explained that the reason beginning magicians were often poor is that when they practiced the LBRP they were “banishing earth” and therefore limiting their financial prospects! Very sad, because this person was otherwise pretty knowledgeable and I lost a lot of respect for him on the spot.
Hey. Where could I learn deeper about this? Which books?
One reason some feel it’s ok to “create” or “alter” the LBRP to suit their belief system is because it is derived from the GD and not some ancient sacred mysterious ritual.
The basic purpose according to Penczak is banishing “all terrestrial forces that do not serve your highest good, clearing your aura and clearing the environment…”. By terresterial, he doesn’t mean elements. As you have said, it directly correlates with Malkuth, a representation of the material world and “Earth” that encompasses all of the elements.
“These are excellent points that are often overlooked, even by people who really should know better.” I really appreciate what you said. I respect your work a lot.
Can you co deeper on this??
Please.
